Glass fiber is an important material for electron industry. In USA, the raw material for glass fiber is kaolin only. But in Japan, Korea and China, the main raw material is pyrophyllite because of the rich source in this area. Japan imports pyrophyllite from China for quite a long time. Korea is using their own pyrophyllite, and high grade was found shorter. China is going shorter too for high grade pyrophyllite due to the rapid growth of glass fiber industry and the previous huge export. So, right now many pyrophyllite ore vendors are awakening and set up their own powder factories to increase some added value. The total export of pyrophyllite is going short. High grades pyrophyllite is kept for the huge China local markets. This brings trouble for Korean and Japanese importers. Some foreign glass fiber makers already source pyrophyllite powder supply from China directly. Several big pyrophyllite powder makers proved with their practise that Chinese can well control the quality for this product.
Because of this reason, Korean and Japanese pyrophyllite users began to find new solutions. They want to import high Al2O3 content dickite to mix with low Al2O3 content pyrophyllite. Of course, this is a very nice idea. The problem is this idea is conflicted with China local demand too. Already some Chinese pyrophyllite powder makers are mixing some dickitet to produce qualified powder for glass fiber industry. Our government is controlling the export of mineral products. Both pyrophyllite and dickite will be prohibitted soon for export or levied for heavy export duties. So, to focus these 2 products only is not a long term way.
Another substitute for pyrophyllite is kaolin. China is big kaolin origin. There are so many kaolin makers who can export this product for applications in many fields. However most Chinese kaolin makers not yet research fiber glass grade kaolin. There are few successful makers who can achieve the sales or the actual application from their customers.
